So I was thinking about things that are really helpful for beginning knitters. For those of you who don't know I teach part time at The Dancing Sheep Yarn and Fiber as a beginning knitter instructor along side a sweet lady and very talented knitter named Cathy. Our job is mainly to teach you the basics.
In knitting 101 you learn how to do the knit stitch.
In knitting 102 you learn how to do the purl stitch and how to read a pattern.
In knitting 103 you learn how to knit in the round on circular needles (to make a hat), decrease stitches, and knit on double pointed needles.
There are a couple things that we recommend getting that are of great use and of great help and I thought that I would share them with you.
Note that these are things that I own and use often.

The top of the knit kit has a counter that can be used to count your rows or stitches. On the left you will find a crochet hook that can me used to pick up your dropped stitches.
On the Left you will find a thread cutter.
And on the bottom you will find a tape measure which can be used to measure your project if needed and to figure gauge if you needed to.
Now if you flip it over... There is more!!!! > I pulled all of it out so you can see what it all looks like. > You will find a pair of scissors for cutting your yarn and trimming up loose ends after you've weeved them in. There is also a darning needle for weeving in your ends, Needle tip covers to keep your stiches on your needles when you're not working on your project. And stitch markers that are often used when you make hats or when called for in any other patterns. 
There you have run down of "The Knit Kit". It contains the essentials and in a compact little case that is easy to just throw into your bag. I honestly take mine with me every time I leave the house with knitting. I use it at home too obviously. > The next thing I would recommend is more like"things" but fall into the category "BOOK". The first book is called... "Stitch n' B*tch" Though I don't really care much for the curse word in this clever book title... It really is full of tons of helpful information! It shows you the basics and (for the times when you just can't remember!) other techniques that are helpful in more advanced projects. Another thing that is fun about this book is that it gives yu a few practice projects and when you get comfortable enough in your knitting ability there are patterns in the back of the book that you can make! Very cute patterns I might add!
The second book that I recommend is "Knit Speak". It is a quick reference book to those sometimes confusing abreviations in patterns. It will explain to you what it means and will explain to you how to do what the pattern is asking. (Both books include pictures for you visual learners!) >
